Abstract: Nanophotonics are technologies where the flow of optical frequency electromagnetic radiation is engineered in dimensions, or with function enabling feature sizes, comparable to or smaller than the vacuum wavelength. The research on nanophotonic devices will be thus essential to achieve ultra-high photonic integration density. Here I will review our recent research efforts on nanophotonics. In particular, the topics of photonic crystals, plasmonics, silicon photonics, and optical metamaterials (transformation optics) will be covered. Their applications for waveguides, filters, microcavities, nonlinear devices, and even invisibility cloaks will be briefly discussed.

Biography of Min Qiu:
Min Qiu received the Ph.D. degree in Condense Matter Physics from Zhejiang University in 1999. He received the second Ph.D. degree in Electromagnetic Theory from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm, Sweden, in 2001. In 2001 he joined the Department of Microelectronics and Applied Physics, at the same university, where he is currently an associate professor. He is the recipient of the Individual Grant for the Future Research Leaders (FFL II) from the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF) in 2004.  He is also currently holding a 6-year Senior Researcher Fellowship (Rådforskare-VR) of Swedish Research Council.
Dr. Qiu is an author or co-author of about 100 international refereed journal papers, and more than 80 conference contributions, including many invited talks in many international conferences. He has an h-index of 23 up to Aug 2008. He is active in many EU projects and leading many national research projects. His research interests include transformation optics, optical metamaterials, photonic crystals, plasmonic optics, and integrated optical circuits.

Dr. Qiu is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Optical Society of America (OSA), and the European Optical Society (EOS). He served in many program committees of international conferences, including Photonics Europe, APOC, AOE, etc. He is currently acting as a conference co-chair of IEEE LEOS 2009 Winter Topical Meeting on Nanophotonics.
