    题目: Fast and Low Power Optical Modulation in Metamaterials

    Abstract: The quests for higher integration levels and capacity require a “Moore’s Law” development for optical information technology, which in turn drives the efforts to reduce energy requirements for operations such as modulating and switching. Natural materials, however, suffers from limited change of optical index of refraction, thus limiting the size and power consumption of current optical components. In contrast, it was shown that novel designs of fishnet optical metamaterials could offer a modulation of the effective refractive index by as much as 40%, therefore promising a new generation of compact, high speed and low power optical modulators.

    In this talk, I will discuss the progress of optical modulation in fishnet metamaterials at telecommunication wavelength. For the first time, we observed up to 12% modulation effect on these fishnet metamaterials with only 4µW pump power. Our preliminary experiments indicates that at 1.55um wavelength, the excitation source is nearly collimated with broadened near field profile, which is verified by simulation result. To optimize the modulation depth, we also conducted analysis using an effective LC circuit model. It was found that smaller capacitance and larger inductance in the effective circuit is preferred, providing new insights of improving switching ratio and lower loss on these integrated optical modulators.

    Biosketch:

    Nicholas Xuanlai Fang is an assistant professor of Mechanical Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He received his PhD of Mechanical Engineering in February 2004 from the University of California-Los Angeles(UCLA), under Professor Xiang Zhang. He also holds MS (1998) and BS (1996) degrees in Physics from Nanjing University, China. Dr. Fang’s research highlight includes first demonstration of optical superlensing (listed by SCI as a fast breaking paper of physics in April 2006), invention of far IR magnetic/plasmonic metamaterials, and invention of solid state electrochemical nanoimprint technology that offers sub-20nm resolution. He is also interested in energy and mass transport phenomena in micro- and nanoscale systems. Dr Fang is recipient of several awards and recognition, including NSF Career Award of year 2009, Technology Review magazine’s top young innovators of year 2008, and ASME Tau-Pi-Sigma Gold Medal. He served as a symposium co-organizer of MRS spring 2006 meeting, with focus on optical negative index materials.
