Caudate gold nanoparticles have been synthesized in high yield by a simple temperature-reducing seeding approach, without additional capping agent or surfactant. The added seed colloids, the solution reaction temperature, and the initial concentration of gold ions are critical factors to form the special nanostructures. A possible mechanism is also proposed the formation of tadpole-shaped nanoparticles as a kind of aggregation-based growth, including spherical aggregation and linear aggregation.
